CHATEAU DE TERRE-NEUVE

The château of Terre-Neuve is perfectly situated in the beautiful town of Fontenay le Comte. Where you can discover the interesting and historical heritage of the Vendee. All our visits are guided in French and English and there is ample car parking facilities to welcome our visitors.

The chateau was built in 1580 for Nicolas RAPIN , great provost of the constabulary of France and companion in arms of HENRY THE 4th. In this jewel of the French Renaissance he welcomed illustrious people, such as The Duke of SULLY and Agrippa d'Aubigné.
During the 19th century, the chateau belonged to the famous etcher The Marquis Octave of ROCHEBRUNE who produced 492 etchings at Terre Neuve and was therefore considered by some people as the "PIRANESI'' of his time ".

This is the dining room.

Inside the château, still owned by the descendant of Octave of Rochebrune, our visitors can admire paintings , furniture and items of clothing dating from the 17th and 18th century. Also on show are diverse collections including a collection of mortars.

This fire place with ALCHEMICAL symbols
is a good representation of the main
stage leading to the realisation of
"THE GREAT WORK"
namely the quest for the philosopher's stone.

"The stone baring the sign of the sun".
This was only a small token of what awaits you at the château. Please do not hesitate to come for a more in depth visit into the Vendeen heritage at the château of "TERRE- NEUVE".
